4 Years, Lots of Classes

WRIT 1122

WRIT 1122, is a course required by the common curriculum at DU and was my first interaction with the writing program at the university. They all have different topics, and mine was Remix. What is remix you ask? It is the taking of existing materials and using them to create something new. One of the ways we looked at this is how songs are sampled as a component of a completely different and new song. The end purpose of all WRIT 1122 courses are to understand how arguments are made, and how to strengthen the ones we will end up making during our college careers.

Conservation Biology

Conservation Biology was the biology course that changed my life, and I mean that to the most real degree. Up until this point I thought I wanted to go into the medical field in some capacity. I took this class because of scheduling conflicts and by the end I had decided that my true calling was in the realm of conservation and science communication. The course focused on improving scientific reasoning and communication skills, understanding conservation biology and its importance, and had a heavy emphasis on research.

Diverse Rhetorics

Diverse Rheotrics dove into the different rhetorics that influence writing, and shed light on the vast world beyond the classic western canon academia has become conditioned to accept as the “correct” way to write and make yourself heard. The course framed rhetoric as an ever changing, constantly changing adaptive practice in language, identity, audience, and culture. Beyond Western rhetoric, African American, Asian, Latinx, Indigenous, feminist, and queer rhetoric were all explored.

Theories of Writing

By far, Theories of Writing was the funkiest writing class I took at DU, and I mean that in the best way. The course explored what writing has been, currently is, and possibly could be in the future. It encouraged us to dive deep into finding ourselves as writers by pushing us to do pieces within many different genres like horror, personal journaling, creative nonfiction, and soundscapes. New theories were supported by a multitude of outside sources, and creative approaches were not only encouraged, but required. This class got me excited about writing like no other class has, and I found myself excited to go to class and have discussions about writing theory, something I truly never thought I’d say.

Memoir and Personal Writing

Memoir and Personal Writing was a lot like how it sounds. Creative nonfiction was the name of the game in this applied writing course. The focus homed in on two major assignments: the Memoir Essay and the Obsessions and Explorations Essay, both of which asked us to uncover what was meaningful to us. Voice, style, and overall writerly identity became the center of discussion as we embarked on our personal writing journeys. I find myself grateful for leaving this class until the winter quarter of my last year, as I feel that a class that demands reflection is best served by the ability to reflect on the four years of a huge growth period.

Writing Design and Circulation

Writing Design and Circulation is the capstone class for the Minor in Writing Practices. It was the last writing class I took at university (naturally) and became the culmination of some of my most favorite classes that I partook in over the four years. The main component of this class was this portfolio, so I’m glad you made it here to check out my work. In addition to the portfolio, the other major assignment of the class was the revision assignment, which can be found in that little link to your left.
